South Yorkshire Police investigate racial abuse towards Charlton manager
Police in South Yorkshire are investigating racist remarks which were posted on Twitter following a football match in Sheffield.
Charlton Athletic manager Chris Powell was abused on Twitter after his team beat Sheffield Wednesday in Monday’s FA Cup fifth round game at Hillsborough Stadium.
Charlton won the game 2-1 and with it a quarter-final trip to Sheffield United – ending the prospect of a Steel City cup derby at Bramall Lane between United and Wednesday.
Powell celebrated his team’s win by hanging on the crossbar at the end of the game and doing chin-ups.
Comments were posted on to his Twitter account.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “We will not tolerate racial or discriminative content on social media sites.
“We have been made aware of some racist messages.”
