Slurs directed at defender Courtney Meppen-Walter and threats against his family have been posted on Twitter.

Much of the abuse centres on an incident in 2012 where defender Mr Meppen-Walter caused the deaths of two people in Manchester while driving carelessly.

The former Manchester City youth player served eight months of a 16-month prison sentence and joined United just days after his release last November.

Police and Carlisle United have confirmed they are aware of the abusive messages.

A United statement said: “The club is aware of the abuse defender Courtney Meppen-Walter has received via Twitter in recent weeks and we can confirm that statements have been taken by Cumbria police regarding the matter.

“As this is now an ongoing investigation we are not in a position to comment further at this time.

“We would like to thank Cumbria police for the swift and professional manner in which they have responded to what is a very sensitive issue.”

Police say they were alerted on Wednesday. A Cumbria force spokesman said: “We are making inquiries and are currently investigating.”
